How to Read the Topology Graph
The force-directed graph above is not a decorative chart - it is a mathematical map of capital relationships. Each node is a financial entity: large nodes are ETFs, smaller nodes are the individual PSX equities they hold. Connecting edges carry weight: a thick line between an ETF and a stock means that stock occupies a significant portion of the fund's portfolio. A thin line means a minor position.
- Identify Fund Clusters: ETF nodes drawn close together share similar underlying portfolios. If MIIETF and MZNPETF appear tightly clustered, they are mathematically exposed to the same market movements - holding both offers no meaningful diversification benefit, just double the management fees.
- Spot Systemic Hubs: Look for large stock nodes positioned centrally between multiple ETF nodes. These are Pakistan's most crowded equity trades. A liquidity crisis, earnings shock, or regulatory action on one of these hub stocks will simultaneously impair the NAV of every ETF connected to it.
- Analyze Link Thickness: Hover over any node to highlight its connections. Link thickness is proportional to portfolio weight. A very thick line signals dangerous single-asset concentration - if that stock falls 20%, your fund absorbs a much larger hit than the headline index would suggest.

In mature markets like the US, the S&P 500 contains 500 companies across 11 GICS sectors. True diversification exists because the underlying economy is genuinely diversified. Pakistan's KSE-100 is structurally different: the index is dominated by a small number of capital-intensive, export-linked, and government-connected sectors. Commercial Banks, Oil & Gas Exploration, Fertilizers, and Power Generation - four sectors - routinely account for over 60% of total market capitalisation.
This concentration has a multiplier effect on systemic risk. When the Pakistani rupee depreciates sharply, it pressures both energy importers and fertilizer manufacturers simultaneously. When interest rates spike, it compresses banking NIMs while also raising the discount rate applied to power sector dividend streams. The point is: these sectors do not diversify each other in the way that, say, healthcare and consumer staples diversify in developed markets. They are correlated through macroeconomic linkages.
For ETF investors, this means that even holding funds benchmarked to different indices provides less insulation than the fund names might suggest. The topology graph makes this visible - what looks like a diverse set of funds often resolves into a dense cluster of shared exposures.
The Diversification Illusion - A Pakistan-Specific Warning
Many retail investors in Pakistan buy multiple ETFs believing they are diversifying their portfolio. The logic seems sound: one fund tracks the KSE-100, another tracks an Islamic index, a third tracks a momentum factor - three different methodologies must mean three different risk profiles. In practice, this is often not the case.
If you hold both MIIETF and MZNPETF, you are not buying two distinct baskets of assets. Instead, you are paying two different management fees to hold virtually identical allocations to the same banks, the same power companies, and the same fertilizer conglomerates. The overlap matrix in this tool will show you the exact percentage of capital deployed identically in both funds.
The diversification illusion is particularly acute with Shariah-compliant funds. Because Shariah indices exclude conventional banks and alcohol, they over-weight permissible high-cap sectors like fertilizers and energy - which themselves are heavily intertwined. A Shariah ETF investor might feel morally diversified from the banking sector, but they are often more concentrated in ENGRO, FFC, and HUBC than the equivalent conventional ETF.
True portfolio diversification requires going beyond ETF names and examining the actual stock-level overlaps the topology map reveals.
The Mathematics of Minimum Weight Overlap
To scientifically measure how identical two ETFs are, we calculate the Shared Capital Overlap using the Minimum Weight method. This is a more conservative and more accurate measure than simply counting shared holdings - because it accounts for the weight of each shared position, not just its presence.
For every stock i shared between ETF A and ETF B, we take the minimum of its weight in both funds. Summing these minimums yields the exact percentage of the portfolio that is functionally identical - the portion of your investment that is doing the same thing regardless of which fund you chose.
Consider a simple example: ETF A holds MEBL at 12% and ETF B holds MEBL at 8%. The minimum is 8%, so 8 percentage points of your blended portfolio are doing identical work. Repeat this calculation for every shared stock and you have the total redundancy - the portion of capital that is paying two management fees for a single economic exposure.
An overlap score of 60%+ between two funds is a strong signal to reconsider your allocation strategy. You are not diversifying - you are duplicating costs. In Pakistan's thin ETF market, where management fees typically range from 0.5% to 2% per annum, eliminating unnecessary duplication can meaningfully improve your long-run net return.
